New projects in freight transportation
11/12/2004 - 31/12/2004
In 2004, new projects were developed and approved in the field of freight transportation. That year saw the successful launching on the transport market of a new service – the carriage of containers on the Sofia (Freight Station) – Port of Thessaloniki – Sofia line. This year, 1 pair of trains run weekly on this line. Until the end of 2005, their number is planned to increase to 4 pairs. In 2004 in Ljubljana, the heads of the railway administrations of Slovenia, Croatia, The Republic of Serbia and Montenegro, Bulgaria and Turkey signed an agreement for the introduction into operation of the East Express direct freight train on the Ljubljana – Istanbul – Ljubljana line. This is a modern product in freight transport that constitutes the first regular railway connection between Europe and Asia on the pan-European corridor Õ. It is for the first time that railway companies from the region offer a transport product directly to the clients. The launching of the East Express is indicative of the will to run a commercial risk and of the new market-based mentality of the railway companies taking part in the project.
