The new Executive Director of “Bulgarian State Railways” EAD presented his main priorities
13/10/2009

At a media briefing held today, the new Executive Director of “Bulgarian State Railways” EAD, Pencho Popov, presented the main priorities in his work.

Popov pointed out that tightening of financial discipline is one of the foremost measures to be implemented. This includes limitation of expenses as well as reduction of 12-13% of personnel, mostly administrative staff. Popov added that the optimization of personnel will be based on careful selection in order to ensure that qualified and trained employees and workers will keep their jobs.

Attraction of additional cargo through market-oriented actions will be among the main factors for the stabilization of the financial situation of the company and the enhancement of competitiveness of the national railway carrier. In parallel with the proactive commercial policy in the sphere of freight transports, Popov pointed out the necessity of flexible offer of passenger services as well.

The new Executive Director of “Bulgarian State Railways” EAD added that the main priority of the railway carrier is the provision of safe, comfortable and reliable services to the customers. Popov explicitly stated that strict penalties will be imposed in the cases of failure to perform professional duties.

On the occasion of the European road safety day which is today, Pencho Popov expressed his support for this initiative and pointed out that railway transport helps alleviate the heavy road traffic. He gave as an example the fact that about 7 – 10 thousand people travel by train every day between Pernik and Sofia. Thus, train traffic alleviates road traffic along the congested south-western access roads to Sofia.

Popov firmly stated that in the circumstances of economic crisis in the country he will not tolerate proposals to increase the prices of train tickets.
